What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery is a surgery with the sole purpose of altering the amount of food intake and absorption in order for the patient to lose significant amounts of excess fat. Bariatric surgery reduces the capacity of the stomach and, hence, limits the amount of food intake. Surgical options include Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass surgery, Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. All three surgical procedures have proven to be appropriate alternatives for patients who have tried all conservative measures to control their weight and have failed. What bariatric surgery isn’t is a quick fix of a serious, long term problem. Undergoing any of these procedures requires commitment, determination and lifestyle changes. If you’re up to the challenge, the coupling of bariatric surgery with your individual effort may prove to be the ideal solution for your weight loss problems, related medical conditions and psychosocial issues. | |
